What on earth is a fish like this doing in tiny Minnehaha Creek?
The world may never know. But when 12-year-old Mac and 14-year-old Owen of Edina, Minnesota, saw it, they knew they had to land it.
The two boys had known about the monster fish for a couple weeks, but couldn’t figure out how to catch it until Mac, a long-time viewer of outdoor TV and internet videos, remembered how a group of coastal fisherman caught a shark.
So he ran home, made a slipknot, and hurried back. Here’s how it all went down:
Pretty impressive! I love how excited they all are.
Even more impressive, the boys—who had gathered quite the audience by this point—had the werewithal to measure the fish and get it back into the water quickly.
The Minnesota DNR suspected that this was “Legendary Lou,” a sturgeon that had been spotted in Lake Minnetonka over the past few years. At any rate, they wanted to move the fish back to the lake so it could potentially survive and perhaps even spawn, but couldn’t manage to catch it.
This was a pretty stressful event for the fish, but I doubt he or she was going to thrive in a tiny creek anyways. Hopefully the DNR manages to move it back to Lake Minnetonka.
At any rate, it’s good to see the next generation of outdoorsmen getting excited about big fish.
