Winner: “North From The Wave” By Kyle Jones
“This was my first visit to this iconic location, having gotten lucky with the lottery for a hiking permit the day before,” explains Jones. “I arrived at the trail head before dawn so I could explore ‘the Wave’ while the sun was still fairly low in the sky. A storm was forecast for the afternoon, which added to my motivation to be there early. After photographing several well-known spots, I made my way back to the entrance and spent some time enjoying the view and capturing some details in the sandstone. I really liked this view, with the swirling lines leading the eye toward the buttes in the distance. I set my tripod at a height that framed the background features within the swirl. Because I wanted the image to be sharp from front to back, I made several captures at different focus points and combined them in Photoshop.” Canon 5DSR, Canon 16-35 f/4L IS lens, Breakthrough CPL, Really Right Stuff tripod/ballhead.
