The National Park Service turns 100 years old in 2016 and it says it want everyone to join the party! It is the first of 16 days in ’16 that the parks will offer free admission to everyone.
The NPS notes here are several national parks directly associated with Dr. King:
- Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site in Georgia, which contains his birthplace, home, church, and grave
- The 45-mile long Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail in Alabama, where he led the 1965 Voting Rights March
- National Mall and Memorial Parks in Washington, D.C., which include the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial, where he spoke of his dream for America
Parks across the country are offering special programs to reflect on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., including George Washington Carver National Monument, Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site, and the National Mall and Memorial Parks. There will also be a special bell-ringing ceremony at Independence Hall National Historical Park.
