Winner: “Rise” By Danielle Austen
“I knew there would be fog this particular morning on Monskville Reservoir in Northern New Jersey located about an hour from where I live,” says Austen. “All the elements were lining up: the cold 45-degree temperature morning, the dew point, no wind, warm waters as it was mid-September and there would be clear sunny skies. So, myself and a fellow photographer and kayaker were up at 4:30 a.m., out the door by 5 a.m. and in the water by 6:30 a.m. at dawn. We paddled through the fog around the dead trees, making images as it kept getting lighter out. Then, after 7 a.m., the sun started to peek over the surrounding mountains and it just lit up the fog beautifully. Though one of the challenges when photographing from a kayak is trying to keep your subject in view as the boat is always drifting.” Canon EOS 5D Mark III, Canon EF 100-400 f4-5.6 at 180mm. 1/400 sec., f/8, ISO 200.
